King David Baptist Church was organized 41 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. With racial discrimination still dominating and inferiority compounding the lives of blacks, along with severe oppression, many African Americans left the south. A large number of southern black Americans refused to leave their birthplace. Through faith and a strong determination to stand were those who remained. A select few in Anderson, South Carolina founded King David Baptist Church in 1904 under a Brush Harbor. The Church was located on Highway 24 in front of the Old John McClure Estate. During this time, the Deacon Board members were: Dea. Bud Hammond, Dea. Willie Moore, Dea. Sammy Moore, Dea. Clark Whitner, and Dea. Robert Jones. Under their leadership, two acres of land was purchased from Mr. McClure, located near the old Nute Brown Place and close to the creek.
The Church worked diligently to pay for the land in a short period of time. The property was later exchanged for our present location. The cost of the land was $75. After this land was purchased, the board decided to build a church, rectangle in shape, 32 X 50.
The materials needed to build the Church was donated by the Webb Family. They found that through perseverance they could get the lumber to build free of charge by cutting and carrying it to the McClure Saw Mill; thus, the first building was erected.
